Social Contribution Activities through the Establishment of the "Usuri" Fund

Case1 Image

From the CEO to the staff, all members of LG Electronics have been participating in developing social contribution funds. In particular, the company's grant program stipulates that the company must match any donation made by an employee, like for like. In doing so, the company embodies a spirit of social contribution, which is shared by every member of the company.

LG Electronics has reinvested part of its profits in society in various ways. Since 1995, LG Electronics has been deducting less than 1,000 won from each employee's salary and has channeled this money into the "Usuri Fund." "Usuri" is a Korean word meaning "small change." The "Usuri Campaign of Love Salary" sees the deduction of less than 1,000 won from employees' salaries each month — an amount that few would ever miss. Once enough money has been accumulated, it is dispersed to fund various social contribution activities. Since the campaign began in 1996 in the labor union, it has spread to all employees.

The money in the Usuri Fund, which is raised by the employees of LG Electronics Korea, is used to help children and neighbors in need. It has been used, for example, to help set up a children's cancer center in Russia.
