- Comes with HDD (Hard Disk Drive) so that 190 minutes of HD digital programs can be recorded and played back without any tape - Features “Time Shift Recording” for simultaneous recording and playback
LG Electronics is launching a set-top box for HD (High Definition) grade digital signal reception with embedded HDD (Hard Disk Drive). (Model: LST-2400).
The newly introduced set-top box with embedded HDD is based on PVR (Personal Video Recorder ? Note 1) technology where storage device technology used for computer hard disk has been applied to the set-top box to give free reign on recording and playback of TV programs and multimedia data for TV broadcasting.
The currently available hard disk recorder can only record analog signals. But the new set-top box by LGE is first in the world that can record and play back HD grade digital signals.
LST-2400 also has a 40GB HDD to record/playback about 190 minutes-long digital programs. This means that you can record the coming 2002 World Cup games in HD signals.
In addition, the product offers basic features of VCR (freeze, playback, fast forward, rewind, etc.) as well as “Time Shift Recording” so that you can playback from the scene you froze before going out or taking care of something else without missing anything of your favorite programs.
Other major features include: □ TV freeze/playback; □ Going to current program in progress during simultaneous recording/playback; □ Before/after high-speed search (3-speed, 6-speed, 20-speed, 50-speed); □ Slow motion; □ Repetition of set section; and □ Video clipping to store selected areas within time shift section.
LGE invested 1 billion won for product development and has over 20 patents pending in and out of Korea.
The introduction of the digital set-top box with HDD not only offers a simpler alternative to the conventional VCR using videotapes, but will also result in an expanded market base as a digital information appliance that integrates broadcasting and network.
LGE expects the set-top box for digital signal reception combining HDTV and PVR to take off with full launch of digital broadcasting.
■ Note 1) What is PVR (Personal Video Recorder)?
PRV is a type of personal digital recorder that can record/playback TV programs and other Internet contents with 30 to 50GB HDD (Hard Disk Drive) in the TV body or set-top box.
In other words, it uses functionalities of the computer hard disk to record multiple programs simultaneously and is known as the technology delivering more power to the viewers as viewers can freely choose programs they want to watch regardless of the broadcasting schedule.
