LG Electronics Develops World's First 23GB HD Grade VDR
- Next generation digital AV with five times more recording capacity than DVD - Can be used in Korea as well as U.S. with embedded VSB tuner - Records and plays HD grade high definition video signals ...Can also playback conventional DVDs - To be introduced at CES 2002 exhibition opening in the U.S. today
LG Electronics has become the world's first to develop HD (High Definition) grade VDR (Video Disc Recorder) with embedded VSB (Vestigial Side Bands) tuner - a cutting-edge AV product that can record and play HD grade video signals with capacity that is five times larger than DVD (Digital Versatile Disc).
The HD grade VDR with embedded VSB tuner was developed by LGE with investments of 40 plus researchers and a total 26 billion won over the last year. The new product does not only record and playback 23GB HD grade digital images, but can also playback conventional DVD discs. It is another technological fete for LGE following on the heels of successful development of the world's first 15GB HD grade VDR introduced by LGE in January last year.
The new innovative VDR can record and playback with a 405㎚ high-density "blue laser diode pick-up" on 23GB HD grade video disc that is five times larger in capacity than the 4.7GB DVD. It also comes with an embedded VSB tuner to ensure compatibility in Korea and the U.S. With these and other cutting-edge features, the new VDR is hailed as the latest offering of advanced digital AV that can directly record HD broadcasting signals on disc.
Moreover, the VDR can offer freeze/slow motion/fast forward images while recording and playing over 2 hours (160 minutes) of HD images. It also has navigation features that enhance user convenience with easy search of images stored in menu screen.
It also includes a VSB signal receiver and HD grade image decoder (MPEG-2) for direct link to HD grade monitor and has embedded IEEE1394 (International fixed line communication standard) interface that can send digital data for easy access to HD TV and set-top box with maximum data transmission speed of 24Mbps.
LGE has also introduced new HD DVD compatible pick-up technology that allows HD disc and conventional 4.7GB DVD disc to be recorded and played with a single pick-up.
