LG Electronics Develops Multimedia Messaging Service Center for IMT-2000
- Korea's first for 3G mobile communication system…commercial supply to begin from 2002 - Can transmit and view large size multimedia data including moving pictures, voice, images and text - First to deliver to cdma2000 1x systems followed by delivery to IMT-2000 service providers in and out of Korea
LG Electronics has become the first Korean company to develop a MMSC (Multimedia Messaging Service Center) to emerge as a dominant player in this fast growing cutting-edge market.
The new MMSC supports video image streaming service via 3GPP/3GPP2, which are 3G mobile communication standards. The new messaging service will be commercially available from 2002 after field tests.
Early this year, LGE was the first in Korea to commercialize MMSC for cdma2000 1x (model: LGE-MMSC) and supplied it to LG Telecom. Successful development of the new MMSC for IMT-2000 is expected to give LGE a strong push in becoming the front-runner in the IMT-2000 market that is expected to emerge from 2002.
MMSC not only services the conventional voice messaging system and unified messaging system, but also leverages the strengths of IMT-2000 and its capabilities for high-speed data communication for unified management of large size multimedia data including moving pictures, voice, text, and photographs regardless of data size or type.
The new MMSC supports large size data transmission suitable for IMT-2000 or high-speed Internet environment. In other words, subscribers will be able to view or transmit e-mail, fax, voice as well as multimedia messages such as video clips anytime, anywhere.
In particular, unlike the unified messaging system which is just an additional service device operated via external interface with the mobile service network, MMSC is within the IMT-2000 network to be used as a main service device. As such, when considering the service impact and market size, the development of the new MMSC becomes all the more significant.
LGE plans to expand its product offering from large size MMSC for mobile service providers to mid-to-small size MMSC for mobile IDCs(Internet data center) or contents providers that can support a wide range of standards including 3GPP, 3GPP2, and WAP. It will also introduce its MMSCs to the international IMT-2000 market next year.
